Obituary of Shirley R. Coon

Shirley Ruth (Potter) Coon, 87, of Clinton, New York passed away peacefully on July 6, 2023. Born on August 26, 1935, she was the daughter of Donald and Irene (Foss) Potter. Shirley graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1953, she then pursued her education at Faxton School of Nursing, graduating in 1956 and became a gifted and compassionate nurse. Shirley was employed by Faxton Hospital for her entire career as an RN where she cared for countless patients and touched the lives of many with her care and advocacy.

She was united in marriage to Roderick W. Coon on June 16, 1967, at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Utica. Along with their son Tim, they shared a blessed life together until Rod’s passing on July 23, 2016.

Shirley was a woman of many talents, she had an incredible ability to knit and made the most beautiful sweaters, she enjoyed cooking and baking especially for family and friends. She loved good music and enjoyed dancing. Shirley adored her Labrador Retrievers and was always greeted by the wagging tails and familiar faces of her cherished companions.

Shirley leaves behind her son Timothy Coon and his life partner, Dorothy Oaksford of Oneida; nephews Donald Potter and wife Catherine, and Brad Potter; a niece, Lorie Decker; several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Roderick Coon and a brother Donald Potter.

Friends and Family are invited to call from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service in Clinton. A funeral service will take place on Friday, July 14, 2023 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank Lutheran Care of Clinton including Optum for the kindness and care shown to Shirley. Those who wish to do so may make a donation in memory of Shirley to a Humane Society of their choice.
