Obituary of Alma L. Smith

Alma L. Smith, 85, a long time resident of the Eastern Star Home, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Faxton-St. Lukes Hospital. She was born in Utica on November 24, 1923, the daughter of the late Perry G. and Linda Wood Smith. Alma graduated from Sauquoit High School. She was employed as an office clerk for the A&P Market in Waterville and then as an office clerk for the Chicago Market. Alma was a member of the Paris United Church of Christ, where she was the choir director. She was also a member of many organizations, including The Eastern Star, Valley Stars Chapter #217, and has been the charter member of the Campus Star Chapter #278 since its inception in 2004. She also was the President of the Eastern Star resident council and a volunteer in the Eastern Star gift shop. She is survived by her brother, George Maynard Smith, of Newport News, VA, and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. Alma was predeceased by her brother and his wife, Lloyd and Martha Smith, and a sister-in-law, Lisa Smith. Memorial services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Eastern Star Home, 8290 State Route 69 Oriskany, NY 13424. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements made by the Owens-Pavlot & Rogers Funeral Service, Inc. In lieu of flowers please consider donations in Alma's memory to the Order of the Eastern Star, Oriskany, NY, 13424 or the Paris Hill United Church of Christ, Old Rt. 12, Paris Hill, NY, 13456. A special thank you to the staff at the Eastern Star Home. The staff and residents will miss Alma dearly as she was part of their extended family.
